Presented by:

Henne Vogelsang

from Open Build Service

I am a full stack developer of the modern web. I express my apps business values in RSpec, capture it's behaviour in Ruby on Rails models and help Humans to interact with it's data through mobile first, responsive and progressive enhanced HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript driven user interfaces. For more than a decade I am a rigorous practitioner of Free Software development. I love the raw power of communities collaborating and I believe that everyone should be able to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software that is running the world. My day job at is hacking the Linux distribution development platform Open Build Service. In my free time I practice my skills by developing an event organization app, the Open Source Event Manager, by operating the server infrastructure of the openSUSE project and by teaching free software development with programs such as Google Summer of Code.

No video of the event yet, sorry! Meanwhile...

This talk is about the the new openSUSE mentoring program that we just started and it's first practical application: Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2016.

Here is what we are going to talk about:

  • Introduce you to the general ideas of openSUSE 101 and GSoC
  • Show you our projects participating in GSoC 2016
  • Teach you how to get started with mentoring
  • Advise you on how to help to attract students
  • Give you a outlook of 101's future
  • Tell you how to contribute to 101
  • Answer the remaining questions you might have

If you're interested in helping less experienced/knowledgeable people with Free Software development swing by and let's collaborate! :-)
