It is crucial to understand the values of freedom and Free Software during one's schooling to ensure it remains a core belief in society. This talk aims to initiate a discussion on the role of Free Software, particularly in communication and community building within academic spaces.

Educational institutions commonly rely on centralized services like G-Suite and other proprietary solutions to facilitate communication within scholarly communities. The session will explore how deploying student-run ActivityPub-based platforms for social interactions along with knowledge sharing tools such as MediaWiki, Apache Answer etc. can help uphold user freedom, the challenges involved, and possible solutions.

Throughout the session, I will share my experience running services like: - MediaWiki, Mastodon, PeerTube, Apache Answer, Lemmy

While also engaging experienced members from the openSUSE community to provide insights on addressing the challenges of such deployments.

The goal is for student attendees, as well as those in the academic field, to be inspired to deploy similar platforms that promote a community centered on freedom.
