Hi,

I'm Vysakh Premkumar. DevOps engineer by profession, Free Software Enthusiast and loves spreading the word about Free Software. I've been active in the Free and Open Souce community primarily due to my experience hosting FOSSMEET which is India's longest-running FOSS-themed gathering. I'm interested in Libre Social Media software, knowledge-sharing tools like MediaWiki, and also containerization and deployment tools.

No video of the event yet, sorry!

It is necessary to understand the values of freedom and free software during one’s schooling to keep it close to heart when one lives in a society. The Talk intends to initiate a discussion on Free Software's role, especially in communication and community building in academic spaces. Generally, Educational institutions use E-Mail services such as G-suite which has centralized control to establish communication within a scholarly community. How deploying student-run activity-pub-based platforms helps uphold user freedom, its challenges, etc will be discussed in the session.

Throughout the session, I’ll be able to share my experience running services such as Mediawiki, mastodon, peertube, etc. And also engage experienced members from the OpenSUSE community to provide their insights to tackle the challenges of doing the same.

As for the goal, I expect the student attendees as well as anyone working in the academic field to deploy similar platforms for building a community that respects freedom.
