Presented by:

Hans de Raad

from OpenNovations

Independent consultant, open-source enthusiast (openSUSE, Drupal, etc). Also a big classical music lover (artistic manager of the Huygensfestival in Voorburg, supporter of several international chamber music festivals in/around The Hague, The Netherlands). One of my companies basic philosophies is, if open-source provides you with a stable revenue (thank you, 10x), you should do something in return. So my company donates 10% of its annual profit to one of the projects we've been using that year. This contribution can also be by providing help, i.e. in 2015 I was project lead and organizer for openSUSE conference in The Hague!

No video of the event yet, sorry!

In a world where open source is both a passion and a paradigm, understanding its economic imperatives and exploring adaptive business models are important for survival and success. The panel unites open source and business experts to discuss the dual themes of financial sustainability and business model diversification within the open-source ecosystem. Financial foundations and strategic business approaches that shape the open source we depend on will be covered in the conversation.

Discussion Points:

Sustainable Revenue Models: Evaluating various revenue channels — subscriptions, support services, and sponsorships — that fuel open-source projects and keep communities thriving. Cost Management: Unpacking the integral costs of maintaining an open-source project and strategic methods for cost control. Diverse Funding Sources: The role of external funding, including venture capital and partnerships, in facilitating project growth. Community Economics: The value of community contribution as a non-monetary asset and its impact on open-source project economics. Success Metrics: Broadening the concept of success to include non-financial indicators alongside economic metrics. Real-World Economic Challenges: Lessons learned from fiscal obstacles encountered by open-source veterans. Exploring Business Models: Dissecting established and pioneering business models tailor-made for various open-source initiatives, assessing their strengths and adapting to market demands. Intended Audience: Open-source enthusiasts, community leaders, entrepreneurs, business strategists and developers are invited to participate in this discussion.

Outcome: Participants will leave the session with a better understanding of how financial strategies and innovative business models can be used to make open source projects successful across different industries and domains.
