Project CIABatta: A Live CD on steroids
Building a virtual "datacenter in a box" on a high-end laptop.
Live CDs conveniently solve a common problem: How can I show off what my Linux distribution (or the Open Source project based on it) can do without the user needing to install anything permanently or even fiddling around with complicated setup instructions.
We want to take it to the next level: With the help of the OpenStack private cloud framework we are building the infrastructure for demos that can not only show off one Linux image, but complex demo setups that consist of several virtual servers, all in one package that can be run on a high-end laptop.
To get there, we make use of openSUSE, the Open Build Service, and KIWI. Python, OpenStack's default programming language, is used for the "glue code".
While the initial use case is for demos, we think the infrastructure we are building can revolutionize the way complex Open Source projects are developed, tested, and maybe even deployed in production.

how to build with OBS
Normally it is a hard task to port a whole distribution to a new CPU platform, since not all packages allow for cross-compilation.
This is why openSUSE went a different way by building pseudo-native with qemu.
This presentation will be about how OBS, qemu and some other tools and tricks were used to efficiently build packages for ARM (aarch64, armv7l, armv5el).

The openSUSE distribution and the SUSE Linux Enterprise products share a lot of things in common. At the same time, they vary in a lot of aspects.
Some of them are caused by fundamental differences in the philosophy and the basic properties of the projects.
With the upcoming CODE 12 of SUSE Linux Enterprise it's time to look at those differences and similarities, as the codebases will be closer together for a long time.
The presentation will show examples where both projects profit from each other and give an insight into the next major codestream of the Enterprise Line.

Open Source Geospatial Software for Geekos
Bringing openSUSE closer to OSGeo
The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, or OSGeo, is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support the collaborative development of open source geospatial software, and promote its widespread use. The foundation provides financial, organizational and legal support to the broader open source geospatial community. It also serves as an independent legal entity to which community members can contribute code, funding and other resources, secure in the knowledge that their contributions will be maintained for public benefit. OSGeo also serves as an outreach and advocacy organization for the open source geospatial community, and provides a common forum and shared infrastructure for improving cross-project collaboration.
This presentation will focus on the integration of OSGeo technologies with the openSUSE project, as well as the state, history, problems and motivation of the Application:Geo project on Open Build Service.

120-alternative-to-commercial-web-analytics-tools-a-cookie-story
Alternative to commercial web-analytics tools, a cookie story
Talk aimed at the current state of EU cookie/privacy laws and how to utilize open source software to comply with that.
As a lot of things on the web, techniques that were once invented with a pretty clear scope (or seemingly so) usually dont take long to find multiple use cases.
In case of cookies, the nicest form of this is persisting session states between HTTP requests, the nastier form is the mechanism with which a lot of sites knowingly hand over visitor-loggint to third parties (with really nice tools!).
In both US and EU legislation has passed to at least increase the visibility of cookie usage and raise awareness.
Nowadays, a law-abiding webcitizen with a website warns his/her users about this, but this is cumbersome and annoying, because, why would you want to bother your visitors with the fact that you are giving away there information, when cleaner alternatives exist?
Piwik is such a tool, if offers a very usefull opensource alternative to the well-known commercial analytics tools and integrates very well with the leading open-source CMS'es.
This session will focus on some of the legal aspects on cookie usage, but mostly on how to integrate Piwik with your (Drupal) site and get the most out of it.

The strategy of bringing more users to the Linux Desktop Operating System
Linux is all over the mobile market, workstations, server, cloud and supercomputing. But not yet on non-geek, average users desktop.
Linux communities, are trying for many years to convince their friends and relatives that Linux Desktop is already here and its working. Tech-savvy bloggers have been writing about the benefits of switching to Linux Desktop for many years.
But it seems that we are not there yet, even if most PC users are using their PC's to browse the internet, chat with their friends and do some everyday productivity work.
It is time to change our strategy, to evolve from geeks and nerds, to evangelists of Linux Desktop Operating System not just as a community but also as individual Linux users.

Explore the world - with Marble
Latest News from the Free Software Virtual Globe
openSUSE has got many software gems that cover a wide range of interests. The virtual globe Marble is certainly one of the highlights - and it's a true allrounder! It's not only suitable for mapping and navigation but also for science and education. Using openSUSE we show how Marble can be used to teach and learn about geography, world history and earth sciences - in a fascinating and playful way. As such it's used at schools as well as universities. We'll also have a look at the latest releases which add a new fun topic to the education mix: space science and astronomy.

A MySQL Odyssey - a Blackhole crossover
Replicating MySQL data cross-platform
MySQL in development environments are most widely deployed on a Windows platform: it's a natural step. However, the Sys Admin's & DBA's tend to prefer a Linux / Unix production host for resource growth capabilities and stability.
In addition to Disaster & Recovery solutions, MySQL Replication can be setup to help reduce the platform gap between the team's favourite solution, i.e. facilitate the platform crossover. For whatever need.
When using MySQL Replication we can share data models, data and even filter between environments and platforms. This can provide us with a wide range of possibilities, not just an automated D&R master-slave 'waiting for the worst to happen' and under-used environment. We can use each step to our own benefit and/or allow access and specific data access, that easily stretches the boundaries .. maximizing business benefits.
Here we'll be seeing a replication example setup, that replicates MySQL databases from a Windows Master, onto an Oracle Linux slave, whose tables are using the BLACKHOLE storage engine, in turn is a Master to the SLES environment.

How to run a perfect openSUSE booth
How to prepare for, set up and staff an openSUSE booth? This community manager has visited countless booths all around the world and shares his best tips and tricks with you!
In the second half he'll present our new merchandising plans. SUSE used to send out merchandising (mostly DVD's) to the community of ambassadors around the world. This process was costly, yet not very effective. A plan was created, research was done, stuff was decided on and we're ready to move forward with designing and printing new posters, stickers, t-shirts, caps, flags and whatnot. This presentation will give an update on the current status in preparation for later discussions and decisions on improvements.

Promotion in Italy
Methods of promoting and activities under unfavorable conditions
Italy is a country unfavorable to free software and the GNU/Linux systems. The FOSS community is both restricted in the number of person and divided. In many cases, moreover, is strongly related to Debian / Ubuntu. The political inertia, the technological backwardness, lack of interest of the school system make it very difficult to make the promotion of a GNU / Linux distribution and in particular of anything that is not Ubuntu.
In these years have been tried various ways to get in touch with the professionals, with schools, with students and ordinary people. Like all experiments, there has been some success stories but also some failures, and the experience sometimes contradicts what logic would suggest.
In this talk, we will try to share and discuss what are the possible ways to promote openSUSE, in potentially hostile environments.

Using code for configuration management is a pretty young development technique compared to traditional development. There are no established best practices yet, which can lead up to a huge mess easily in our code. In this presentation, we'll see how we can use third party reusable base modules (or create our own), and construct services and roles on top of them, in order to build a hierarchy that suits the needs of our infrastructure.

In recent years, the promotion of GNU/Linux and FOSS but also its adoption by big companies and governmental organisations data centers, create a pressing need to ensure knowledge of the employed staff.
In this context and due to the immediate demand of specialized technicians, many suggestions for knowledge documentation on the most used system on web and e-mail server but also on LAMP solutions (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), are offered.
This presentation is reference and analysis on the causes which lead to the certification need as to the reason that Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) satisfies the growing demands.

Something to identify yourself. Usually government-issued identification, such as a passport. Multiple pieces of identification are preferred.
If you need to make new paper slips, this generator tool is suggested: http://openpgp.quelltextlich.at/slip.html
At this time, there are 50+ attendees expected at the keysigning event, so you should bring at least that number of slips. Doubling that may be advisable if the event ends up being very large.
There will be a keysigning event at oSC13. It will happen on $DAY at $TIME. It will be held at the $ROOM.
There is no central key registry for this keysigning. Instead it will simply be a keyslip exchange.
What to bring:

openQA.o.o
fully automated OS testing
Testing an Operating System from bootloader through installer to the applications of the installed system is a lot of hard work and doing this daily is rather exhausting and boring, so I made openQA (using my OS-autoinst test-engine) to do it all for me... or rather us openSUSE users.
This has meanwhile been running since 2010 and found many many bugs, some of which would surely have made it into GM without being noticed.
This talk will give some overview on the why, what and how of our automated testing with a discussion of further plans for improvement.

Introduction to GNU/Linux hardening
Security issues are becoming more importantly than ever before. When you want to deploy your own application, hardening is a inevitable problem that you have to consider about. GNU/Linux itself providing a lot of hardening techniques, including conventional hardening techniques such as non-executable stack/Relocation read-only/ASLR/PIE in GCC/glibc level, and confinement technologies, such as SELinux, Apparmor.

Asking for travel sponsorship through openSUSE Connect
The openSUSE Travel Support program aims to support contributors representing openSUSE at events, conferences and hack-fests with their travel and hotel costs. The program pays up to 80% of the travel and/or hotel costs for contributors who could not afford going to these events otherwise. In turn the contributors make a worthy contribution at the event and report back to the openSUSE community about what they did.
Starting with this oSC'13, requests to the openSUSE Travel Support Program are managed through a new web application integrated into openSUSE Connect. In this talk, the main developer of this new tool will explain how you can use your existing Connect account to submit new events, to ask for travel support for a given event and, which is most important, to get your money reimbursed once your travel is over.

FUSE / curlwwwfs
or how to mount a webserver
Did you know that userland filesystems (FUSE) allow to do crazy things without the risk of crashing the kernel?
Many people know sshfs to mount remote files over ssh, but that needs an account on the remote machine.
I created curlwwwfs to read-only mount standard remote HTTP directories for fun.
With this you can peek into remote iso images (using fuseiso) or do other cool stuff.

Document Freedom Day
How to have 60 events in a week and what we learned
We all want to change the world, and The Document Freedom Day team are no different. To succeed we must identify and empower community leaders and volunteers. We've been doing that for the last five years in order to promote Open Standards around the globe, but what hurdles stood in our way? How can you overcome the same hurdles when you encounter them? And how did a team of only two staff and an intern run 60 events in a single week?

Webapplication security audits
When developing and deploying web applications, the final result is a collection of software all carefully combined to offer a coherent platform.
This platform however consists of several loosely coupled items which can, on various levels, offer possibilities of manipulating the deployment.
This session offers an analysis of these items and offers some insight in the possible attack vectors these might offer.
Focus is not on actually hacking the components but on hardening them, by putting prevention measures (like mod_security) in place.
This presentation is derived from a standard auditprocedure which the author follows on a regular basis.
